Trade Winds Tasting Tent

To taste, share and enjoy food together is a wonderful way to build relationships and enjoy life. Food is a tangible way of sharing culture, how it is prepared, where it originates from and the importance it holds in everyday life. The Trade Winds Tasting tent opens the world to flavour, spice and all things nice. Here you can learn about the VOC spice trade and the culinary traditions of different countries.
In 2012 we explored the flavours of the Netherlands. In 2013 we enjoyed South African fare and this year will be a riot of tastes and choices with food influenced from Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka.
2014 brought enticing, spicy food and the aromas and tastes of Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. The Indian High tea had punters tapping a toe as they ate moreish delicacies listening to the cool tunes of DJ Adam Love, a wonderful way to while away the afternoon.
In 2015, Japanese and Chinese flavours were on offer and the all-day food was popular and delicious. Patrons could learn about the VOC trade in spices as they tasted dishes and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere.
The Trade Winds Tasting tent is named after the trade winds used by the VOC ships to sail to the ‘spice islands’.
The advantage of using the Roaring Forties, the prevailing trade winds of the southern Indian Ocean, was discovered by Hendrick Brouwer in 1610 and gave the VOC a competitive edge.
Voyager Estate
Voyager Estate is our partner in culinary exploration and fine wine as we share a connection with history through the vision of Voyager Estate founder Michael Wright (1937-2012).
He legally acquired both the VOC logo and company name in 1993. The Voyager Estate Seal is a union of the VOC logo dating from 1603 and Freycinet’s Cartouche, representing the Dutch and French link within our WA history.
